For the aspiring young theatre artist, the Theatre Department at Arts High offers a conservatory-styled, intensive, pre-professional training program. While the major concentration is on acting, students are given the opportunity to study technical theatre and theatre management. Under the direction of the Theatre Department, the Musical Theatre Ensemble offers specialized study in this dramatic genre to the entire school.

The Theatre Department training prepares students to enter directly into a professional acting career, colleges, universities and conservatories, providing students with many career choices. Indeed, graduates from the Arts High Theatre Department can be found continuing their postsecondary education at New Your University’s Tisch School for the Arts, Columbia University, Cincinnati School of Music, Carnegie Mellon, Harvard, the University of California Berkeley, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Long Beach, and San Diego, Syracuse University, State University of New York Purchase, CalArts, Howard University, Stanford University, University of Southern California, the London Academy of Dramatic Arts, Minnesota School of the Arts, North Carolina School of the Arts, University of the Arts, Interlochen Center for the Arts, and Juilliard, to name a few.

Theatre Department implements a sequential theatre arts curriculum that incorporates beginning to advanced techniques in acting, voice & speech, movement, stagecraft design, and literature/criticism. The curriculum requires a high level of commitment from the students who train for three hours each day, with after school rehearsals for the season productions. The program emphasizes individual growth and personal discovery as well as an ensemble approach to acting. The faculty consists of working professional artists who share their expertise, experiences and passion for the art of theatre.

The four-year course of study provides a multi-dimensional experience that captures the breath and depth of theatre as an art form and exposes students to historical, contemporary, multicultural, and cutting-edge concepts in theatre. Arts High theatre students graduate not only as trained actors, but critical thinkers, arts leaders and advocates for the theatre arts.
