Structured on a four-year foundation of ballet and modern dance classes, the Arts High Dance Program transforms its dancers into powerful and expressive artists with the skills and versatility to perform in any dance genre. They learn to appreciate and care for their bodies though proper conditioning, dance technique, rest and nutrition. As they study and perform the works of master choreographers, they learn about the times and cultures from which those works arose. Taught by a faculty of professional dancers, every dance class gives students the opportunity to develop keen kinesthetic awareness and strong movement communication skills. Students attend professional dance performances, such as the American Ballet Theatre, the Lula Washington Dance Company, Les Ballets Jazz, and Dance Theatre of Harlem.
Elective classes are offered in choreography, commercial dance and jazz.
The students perform in a Winter Dance Festival, A Choreography Concert and a Spring Dance Concert, which is often an original full-length ballet, such as Alice in Wonderland (2007), Peter Pan (2006), and, Cinderella in New York (2005).
Graduates of the Dance Program have successfully gained admission to the colleges of their choice. The dancers in the Class of 2007 are now attending:
