Advanced PLacement CLASSES (11th AND 12th grade classes only) The Advanced Placement (AP) program offers students the opportunity to pursue college-level studies while still in high school. It also gives them the opportunity to show they have mastered the advanced material by taking AP exams. Students enrolled in AP classes are required to take the AP exam. BENEFITS OF AP Students successfully completing AP examinations offered by the College Board in May can qualify for college credit or become exempt from introductory college courses, permitting them to move more quickly into advanced classes. AP exams are graded on a 5-point scale (the highest is 5). Many of the nation’s colleges and universities award credit and/or placement for grades of 3 or higher on the exam. The College Board offers 29 AP Examinations in 16 subject areas, each consisting of multiple-choice and free response (essay or problem-solving) questions. AP COURSES AT LACHSA AP Calculus A/B, AP Calculus B/C, AP English Language, AP English Literature, AP Government, AP U.S. History, and AP Biology REQUIREMENTS AP courses make substantial demands on students. They are required to do considerable outside reading and other assignments. Students are also expected to demonstrate the analytical skills and writing abilities expected of first-year students in a strong college program. Taking an advanced placement class is equivalent to taking a university class. AP Exams typically cost $86. A fee waiver is also available to students who qualify for free/reduced lunch program. HONORS CLASSES (9TH and 10TH grade only) While all classes at LACHSA are rigorous Honors classes are available for students in 9th and 10th grade by placement exam only. If necessary, middle school transcripts and teacher recommendation are used to appropriately place students in the challenging classes. These are often considered indicators for success in AP classes. |
