DANCE, MUSIC (VOCAL & INSTRUMENTAL), THEATRE, AND VISUAL ARTS!

Dance, Music, Theatre and Visual Arts auditions for 2009 - 2010 school year enrollment will be held Sunday, March 15, 2009. Applications for the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts (LACHSA) will be available starting December 10, 2008 at our “Information Night for Applicants and Parents”, at the main office, or we can mail you one. The application can also be downloaded from our website www.artshigh.org starting December 10, 2008.

Other art classes such as Musical Theatre, TV/Film, and Technical Theatre are electives within the four regular departments and do not have separate auditions for entrance. Students are eligible to audition for Musical Theatre, TV/Film and Technical Theatre electives only after being accepted into the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts (LACHSA).

LACHSA expects to have approximately 135-145 openings for new students. In a typical year, 500+ students audition for these spaces. In order to be eligible to audition, applicants must meet minimum academic, attendance, and behavior standards. This is documented through transcripts, report cards and other school records. We no longer accept letters of recommendation. Once the applicants qualify by meeting these basic standards, each student is judged based on talent displayed at the audition or portfolio review. Grade Point Average (GPA) is not a factor once the basic standard is met.

Each department selects its own students through a juried audition process and a waiting list may be established. Department openings depend on the number of seniors who graduate from that department and also on specific needs of the department for the coming year. For example, if a violin player graduates, the Music Department will seek a violin player to replace that student. This school year the majority of the students selected will be incoming grade 9 applicants. The Theatre Department will be auditioning only incoming grade 9 and grade 10 students. No incoming grade 11 students will be accepted into the Theatre Department for the 2009 – 2010 school year. The Dance, Music and Visual Arts departments will audition incoming grade 9, grade 10 and grade 11 student applicants, but with the understanding that very few if any spaces will be available for incoming grade 10 and grade 11 students due to the large size of the current student body. Also due to the large size of the student body, no incoming grade 12 students will be auditioned for the 2009 - 2010 school year. We believe that it is important for our students to participate for the full four years in order to reap the greatest benefits from our program.

AS PART OF THE APPLICATION PROCESS, WE ARE REQUESTING TRANSCRIPTS OR REPORT CARDS that need to meet the following academic criteria:

Achieve at least a C average (2.0 GPA) with no failures (semesters not cumulative) during the Spring 2008 semester (generally ends June 2008) and the Fall 2008 semester (generally ends January 2009). The Spring 2009 (generally ends June 2009) semester grades will be requested only if the student auditions successfully. If accepted for enrollment consideration, students must also achieve at least a C average (2.0 GPA) with no failures on the Spring 2009 semester report card before being allowed to enroll.
