The physical education classes are designed
to enable students to develop lifetime fitness plans through warm-up and stretch techniques, aerobics, gymnastics, dance, fencing, volleyball, track, softball, soccer and/or relaxation techniques.

Physical Education Course Descriptions

Physical Education Course 1
Grades 9 - 10
A requirement for graduation • Length of course: 1 year
Prerequisite: None

Physical Education 1 A/B is based on the Physical Education Content Standards for California Schools and meets the requirements of the California Code of Regulations, Section 10060, as instruction is provided in all areas of physical education. Students demonstrate knowledge of the mechanics of body movements and competency in motor skills for at least one activity in each area of physical education (aquatics, gymnastics/tumbling, rhythms/dance, combatives/personal safety and individual, dual and team sports). Activities that meet the criteria for a given area are selected based on the needs and restrictions of the instructional setting. The course emphasizes physical fitness and the effects of physical activity on dynamic health as students prepare for the mandated state physical fitness assessment (FitnessGram).

Physical Education Course 2
Grades 10 - 12
Meets graduation requirement • Length of course: 1 year
Prerequisite: Physical Education Course 1

Physical Education 2 A/B is based on the Physical Education Content Standards for California Schools and meets the requirements of the California Code of Regulations, Section 10060, as instruction is provided in all areas of physical education. Students demonstrate competency in motor skills for at least one activity in each area of physical education (aquatics, gymnastics/tumbling, rhythms/dance, combatives/personal safety and individual, dual and team sports). Activities meeting the criteria for a given area are selected based on the needs and restrictions of the instructional setting. The course emphasizes physical fitness and the effects of physical activity on dynamic health. Students are given the opportunity to improve fitness test scores for the state physical fitness assessment (FitnessGram). Students demonstrate knowledge of the psychological/sociological concepts, principles and strategies that apply to physical fitness.


Physical Education Faculty

Ray Alcala, Physical Education I and II
Mr. Alcala graduated in 1993 from St. Paul High School. He then completed his undergraduate work at California Polytechnic University Pomona where he obtained his Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Athletic Training. While there, he successfully completed an athletic training internship, passed the NATA exam and became a certified athletic trainer. He holds a single subject teaching credential in Physical Education. He recently completed his Master’s of Arts degree in Kinesiology at CSULA.  Mr. Alcala has 9 years of classroom teaching experience with various age groups. He taught six years with the LAUSD, at a magnet elementary school, as well as a middle school setting. He also taught at St Paul High School in Santa Fe Springs, where he served as the anatomy and astronomy instructor and Head Athletic Trainer for the Athletic Department who supervised 15 teams.  He is faculty advisor to the 9th grade class and Movie Club.

Felicia Perez, Physical Education II
Felicia Perez comes to LACHSA with enthusiasm and a passion for the arts and physical fitness.  She has a varied background in the Arts. Her Arts background began at a young age, with tap, ballet, gymnastics, trumpet and clarinet lessons.  She was in her school marching and concert band, sang in the choir and acted in theatrical productions.  Her main passion in arts is dance.  She participated in all forms of movement.  As Ms. Perez developed her performing skills as a dancer, she also began to choreograph.  As a choreographer, she took an interest in the working of stage production.  She learned sound and lighting, set design and stage management.  Ms. Perez utilized her skills in the Arts to help her career as a Fitness Professional.  She was awarded Instructor of the Year for the CA/ Utah Region for Bally Total Fitness.  She appeared in commercials and instructional videos for 24-Hour and Bally Total Fitness.  Within the industry, she is known as a master trainer, teaching instructors to become certified.  She then decided to take a step further by inventing and writing a curriculum that could be utilized in schools. She was hired as a curriculum writer for the Los Angeles County Office of Education, and began teaching for the ROP program.  She worked at El Monte and Arroyo High School, as well as an Independent Contractor for Heath and Fitness at Bally Total Fitness, 24 Hour Fitness, City Park and Recreation Centers and El Monte Adult School. 
Ms. Perez is a National Certified Fitness Specialist/ Group Exercise Instructor/ Trainer from the American Council on Exercise and The United States Water Fitness Association. Ms. Perez has 18 years experience in teaching dance, gymnastics, and tumbling.  She was the director of a successful dance/ gymnastics team.  She has worked with top coaches, trainers, and skill evaluators from UCLA and USA Gymnastics.  Ms. Perez has a BS in Telecommunications Management, a Master of Science Degree in Physical Education from Azusa Pacific University, and holds a two California Teaching Credentials for Physical Education and Recreation.  In addition, she has a National Safety Certification from USA gymnastics, Turbo Kick Box, Pilates/Yoga Certification,
 Universal Dance Association Certificate, and is an American Red Cross Professional Rescuer Instructor.
