Computer Applications (one semester):
In this course students learn the computer skills needed for success in school and in life. The focus is on computer concepts, desktop publishing, spreadsheets, databases, and presentation software.
Telecommunications (two semesters):
Students learn Internet communication skills through completing an international collaborative project with peers around the world.
Publications (two semesters):
This class uses digital photography and computer graphic applications (i.e. Photoshop, InDesign) to produce the school yearbook.
Computer Faculty Biographies
Barrie Becker, Chair
Barrie Becker has been a teacher with Los Angeles County Office of Education for over twenty-five years. Before coming to LACHSA in 2002 to teach computer technology, she taught performing arts at several Juvenile Court Schools in the Los Angeles area, producing performances at the Music Center, the Los Angeles Convention Center, and at many educational conferences. She served for nine years as a Mentor Teacher, specializing in technology and the arts. She has also been named a Lead Teacher with the Instructional Technology Institute and a Fellow of the Digital Media Academy. Her expertise in technology includes computer applications, graphic design, telecommunications, audio editing, video production, and Web site construction. As a coordinator of the School Connectivity Project, 2002 -2005, she participated in international exchange programs that sent her to Macedonia and Montenegro and brought a Macedonian teacher to LACHSA. Recently, her students have won awards for their participation in the Flat Classroom Project based in Qatar and for their collaboration in the virtual world, Schome Park. Her students have twice won the Digital Voice award for on-line multimedia production; in addition, they were asked to present their work at the Computer Using Educators conference in the spring of 2008.
Ms. Becker has been recognized for her hard work and dedication by winning the BRAVO award for excellence in Arts Education and the Milken National Educator’s Award. She has also won the Golden Bell Award, Exemplary Program & Process Awards, and the L.A. Dodger Education Hero Award. She has earned many grants to help finance her dedication to technology; sponsors include Best Buy, Smart Valley, and the California Technology Assistance Project.
Ms. Becker holds a Standard Secondary Teaching Credential, granted for Life. She earned a B.A. degree from Connecticut College in New London, Connecticut, and an M.A. degree in Education from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. As a life-long learner, she has pursued many post-graduate studies at various California universities.
